New Delhi: A traffic policeman was allegedly kidnapped by a truck driver here on Wednesday night as he tried to stop the vehicle to check its documents.

The role of sand mining mafia cannot be ruled out in the incident took place at around 10:30 pm last night.

The traffic constable was rescued only after several PCR vans gave a chase for about 10 kms and fired shots to deflate the vehicle's tyres, police said on Thursday.

According to police, Dinesh had flagged the dumper to check its documents near Shankar Road but he was abducted by the truck's driver.

"A PCR call was made in this regard following which the truck was chased by more than half a dozen PCR vans which finally intercepted it near Jhandewalan in central Delhi after shots were fired at the dumper's tyres," said a senior police official.

The dumper's driver has been arrested and the vehicle has been seized.

"Role of sand mafia is being suspected in the case but we are ascertaining the facts," he said.

The truck hailed from Haryana and numbers on its vehicle registration plate were rubbed off.
