New Delhi: Dense fog badly hit operations at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here on Monday, disrupting schedule of around 60 flights.

Fog started to descend over the airport last night but it became dense around 7 AM, forcing the authorities to implement low visibility procedures.

Around 16 flights were cancelled and 28 others delayed either due to operational reasons or poor weather, an airport official said, adding that some more flights were delayed during the day.

No flights, however, were diverted.

While low visibility procedures (LVP) were initiated on main runway around 1:45 AM and terminated at 2:47 AM, it was implemented around 7:15 AM on the third runway and terminated at 10:10 AM.

During the LVP, a total of 30 flights arrived assisted by various categories of instrument landing system. Nineteen flights departed during the LVP period.

The MeT department said visibility is likely to reduce to 500 m in shallow from 11.30 PM and further it may reduce to to 300 m in fog from 3:30 AM tomorrow.

Dense fog had returned to the capital yesterday after a four-day lull, affecting over 130 flights.
