New Delhi: Former Chief Justice of Allahabad
High Court Moti Lal Bhat died in New Delhi on Monday, his family said.

He breathed his last at the AIIMS where he was undergoing
treatment for the past fortnight. He was 80.
Before being elevated to the post of Chief Justice, he
served as the judge of Jammu and Kashmir High Court from May
25, 1981 to October 23, 1989.

Bhat was involved in seeking the release of Rubaiya
Sayeed, daughter of then Union Home Minister Mufti Mohd Sayeed
who was kidnapped by JKLF militants in 1989.

Though he did not negotiate directly with the militant
kidnappers, he had been approached by the state government for
the safe release of Rubaiya.
