New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought a response from the Centre and the state government on a Public Interest Petition (PIL) seeking a direction to take appropriate safety measures in Mayapuri scrap market following last year's radiation exposure incident.

Issuing notices to Delhi government and the Ministry of Environment, a division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna sought their responses by May 4.

The court also tagged the matter with another PIL pertaining to the issue which is pending before it. The bench was hearing a PIL filed by one Salekh Chand Jain through counsel Sugriv Dubey.

In his plea, Dubey said that "after the occurrence of the radiation in Mayapuri market, the government had installed about 25 micro chips at different places for identification of articles from which the radiation could be possible but due to non-maintenance, those chips have gone missing."

He sought the court's direction to "install machineries at different places in Delhi to keep a watch on the level of radiation throughout the city."
