New Delhi: In what brought to fore the humane face of Delhi Police, a pregnant woman gave birth to a baby girl in the back of a patrolling vehicle near Central Delhi's Shanti Van here on Friday after her husband hitched a ride from cops to transport her to the hospital.

Both the mother and the baby have been admitted to Kasturba Gandhi Hospital where they are doing fine.

The incident took place around 3 PM when Rekha, working as a labourer at shanti Van developed labour pain.

"Her husband Ajay sought help from the staff of MPV Oscar-27 which was parked near Shanti Van Red Light. The staff immediately swung into action and helped the woman to sit in the Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) along with two other female labourers and proceeded to Kasturba Gandhi Hospital," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Operations) Ranveer Singh.

But before they could reach the hospital, Rekha gave birth to a female child at Shanti Van Red Light itself. The MPV staff got the mother and the newly born lady admitted in the hospital where both are in good health, police said.

"We will reward the staff of that MPV which will encourage other police personnel to help anybody in distress. There have been similar instances earlier as well where women gave birth in police PCR vans," said Singh.
