New Delhi: Delhi Government is considering
setting up an independent regulator to manage water
distribution network and control illegal extraction of
groundwater.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today said the government
was in the process of framing a bill for conserving ground
water in view of alarming depletion in its level in the city.
"We are considering setting up of a regulator for the
water sector on the lines of power regulator DERC," Dikshit
told reporters.
Dikshit said she was worried over depleting levels of
ground water in the city and added that appropriate steps will
be taken to protect the ground water.
Officials said the regulator will have its say in all
issues related to water in the city and keep a strict vigil on
illegal extraction of groundwater.
