New Delhi: The number of death of babies in
their first year of birth has increased marginally in the
national capital in 2009 compared to the previous year.
As per latest government statistics, the infant mortality
rate per thousand live births in the national capital has
increased to 18.96 in the year 2009 compared to 18.38 in 2008.
The increase in IMR in 2009 has figured in the Delhi
Government`s annual report on `Registration of Birth and Death
Events in Delhi` which was released by Finance Minister A K
Walia today.
The IMR in the city was 13 deaths per 1,000 children in
2004 which increased to 18 in the year 2006 and then to 25
next year, almost double of the 2004 figure.
Although the IMR increased to 18.96 but still it is
much lower than the national average of 53 deaths per 1,000
newborns.
The report said out of total 1.12 lakh deaths in 2009,
about 13,170 (11 per cent) deaths were in the age group of
0-14 years.
