JNU: Students gear up for elections

After almost four years of a union-less campus, students of Jawaharlal Nehru University are once again gearing up for elections.

New Delhi: After almost four years of a
union-less campus, students of Jawaharlal Nehru University are
once again gearing up for elections in line with the SC`s
revised poll guidelines.

The student community went into a huddle and came out
with an endorsement of the apex court`s recent verdict which
had last month laid down revised guidelines for holding
elections at JNU.

However, despite endorsing the apex court`s order of
December 2011, the students` meeting made it clear it only
wanted as an "interim arrangement" till the student unions`
court case is resolved in the Constitution Bench of the
Supreme Court.

The students will meet the Vice-Chancellor tomorrow to
convey to him their decision.

The resolution agreed to upon by the University General
Body Meeting (UGBM) held late night yesterday said the JNUSU
elections should be conducted within one month and the Joint
Struggle Committee should make all efforts to hand over charge
to the JNUSU Election Committee by January 14.

"Once the election committee takes charge, they will meet
and discuss about the election process and decide the dates
and modalities," said Roshan Kishore, general secretary of
Students Federation of India.

The meeting also said that the student unions in future
should carry forward the struggle against the recommendations
of the Lyngdoh committee.

In 2008, the Supreme Court had stayed the election
process in JNU citing violations of Lyngdoh Committee`s
recommendations.
