New Delhi: India on Wednesday termed as "unfortunate" the shooting of two elderly members of the Sikh community in California and said it would pursue the matter with the US administration.

"It is very, very unfortunate that this thing is spreading and a particular community is being targeted," Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur told reporters here.

She said the Indian embassy in Washington will be pursuing the matter with the US authorities.

"Our embassy is very much on the job. We will be pursuing the matter on a regular basis," Kaur said.

Surinder Singh (68) and Gurmej Atwal (78) were shot at in Elk Grove, Sacramento, California on Friday in a suspected incident of hate crime. While Singh died on the spot, Atwal was reported to be in a critical condition.
