Last 2 radiation patients recover at AIIMS

The last two radiation-affected patients admitted to AIIMS here have fully recovered and they are set to be discharged, the hospital said on Friday night.

New Delhi: The last two radiation-affected
patients admitted to AIIMS here have fully recovered and they
are set to be discharged, the hospital said on Friday night.
"The two patients, the last of eight admitted to here,
have fully recovered and they will be discharged tonight or
tomorrow. They are infection-free now and will have to come
for routine check-up," A B Dey, Department of Medicine, AIIMS
said.

Ramji Yadav and Rampal, both from Mayapuri area of the
city, were referred to here from DDU Hospital on April 10
after they were exposed to Cobalt-60 radiation in the scrap
market.
"Their blood count has become normal and they don`t
require a bone marrow transplant," Dey said.

There were eight patients admitted to the premier
hospital due to radiation and one of them had succumbed. The
duo was the last under treatment after others were discharged.

The scrap market has been in news since early April
after eight persons were admitted to the hospital with
suppressed bone marrow and severe burns following exposure to
the radioactive material.

A Gamma Irradiator machine sold as scrap by Delhi
University was the source of deadly radiation.
