New Delhi: District courts in the capital were paralysed Thursday by a day-long lawyers' strike to demand the transfer of property cases from the Delhi High Court to district courts.

"The lawyers will abstain from work today (Thursday)," said Rajiv Khosla, spokesperson of the district courts bar association coordination committee. He said the strike meant to draw attention to the plight of the litigants.

At present, all property disputes up to the value of Rs.20 lakh are dealt with by district courts and those exceeding that amount are taken up by the high court.

"The coordination committee is of the strong view that speedy justice can only be available to litigants if the trial in these cases is conducted only at district courts," Khosla had said Wednesday.
