New Delhi: A total of 2,883 cases of various offences including those of cheque bounce, electricity theft and others were settled here today by special Lok Adalat, organised by Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DLSA).

The Lok Adalat also decided over 40 cases of claims by road mishap victims and awarded Rs 1.13 crore as compensation.

An official statement said 325 criminal cases were disposed of through plea bargaining in special sittings conducted by judges authorised to hold Lok Adalats by the Delhi High Court.

Plea bargaining in a criminal case involves the accused pleading guilty to an offence in lieu of milder punishments.

The Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA), which has organised the Lok Adalats in all the six lower courts in the capital, said 53 benches were constituted for disposal of the cases.

"53 benches were constituted in which 2,503 cases were disposed of relating to Section 138 NI Act (cheque bounce case), civil, criminal compoundable offences, electricity, labour, traffic and matrimonial pending in various courts," a Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DLSA) statement said.

In addition, 15 cases at pre-litigation stage were also disposed of, it added.
