New Delhi: A man who was in an inebriated state allegedly tried to slit the throat of his eight-year-old son before consuming acid in north Delhi`s Burari area on Thursday, police said.
According to the police, the child has been identified as Sachin while his father`s name is Sanjay.
"The incident took place at around 11 A.M. when Sanjay attacked the child with a kitchen knife and tried to behead him.
"He was under depression after his wife left him three months back," a police officer said.
Fortunately, as he was heavily drunk, he could not exert full pressure but still inflicted deep injuries on the child`s neck, police added.
Meanwhile, hearing the child`s cries, neighbours rushed to his aid. Fearing a backlash from the neighbours, Sanjay then consumed acid.
Both of them were taken to Sushruta Trauma Centre for treatment.
"Sachin is critical due to severe injuries to his neck.
"His father, meanwhile, is unconscious but out of danger," police said.
A case of attempt to murder has been registered against Sanjay. Cops are standing by to arrest him once he is discharged from the hospital, police added.
