New Delhi: A 44-year-old man, who
allegedly raped his niece several times and pushed her into
prostitution with the help of his wife, was arrested here
after seven years of evading the law, police said today.
Punnu was apprehended recently from south Delhi`s
Malviya Nagar on a tip off, Deputy Commissioner of Police
(South) H G S Dhaliwal said. Punnu had been declared a
proclaimed offender by a court in 2006.
He allegedly raped his niece, then 18-year-old,
several times with the consent of his wife Saroj, Dhaliwal
"After the death of the girl`s father, her mother also
left her. She came to Delhi and stayed with Punnu. They
misbehaved with her. She was confined to the house and was
raped several times by him.
"The couple also started taking money from outsiders
and forced her to dance in objectionable position in their
presence and pushed her into prostitution," Dhaliwal said.
However, the girl came in contact with Shalini, wife
of an Army officer, who helped her to get a case registered.
Saroj was arrested and in 2006, a court sentenced her
to life imprisonment in this case. However, Punnu managed to
evade arrest so far.
"After his wife`s arrest, he shifted to other cities
of UP with the help of relatives of his in-laws. He regularly
visited his wife in Tihar Jail using different names during
her judicial custody," Dhaliwal said.
