New Delhi: The MCD on Wednesday sealed portions of
19 buildings and demolished as many unauthorised structures in
Lalita Park and nearby areas in east Delhi, where a house
collapse killed 71 people last month, even as irate owners
allegedly manhandled a councillor and blocked a busy road.
MCD officials sealed portions of 19 buildings which
violated the permissible height limit of 15 metres. "The whole
buildings were not sealed. Only the fourth or fifth floors of
buildings which were above the permissible 15 metres were
targeted," a senior official said.
They also demolished 19 unauthorised structures, where
construction was going on.
However, the drive was marred by violence in the area
with a group of building owners allegedly manhandling MCD
councillor Sohan Lal in a parking lot in Lalita Park.
A senior police official said a case of causing hurt has
been registered in connection with the incident.
Another group of locals numbering around 20, meanwhile,
protested on the busy Vikas Marg blocking traffic for
sometime, the official said.
The civic agency has asked the owners of 638 buildings
in Shahdara South Zone to conduct structural safety checking
of their houses and apply to the MCD for regularising them. It
