New Delhi: Not satisfied with the assurance
given by the Union Minister of State for Health Dinesh Trivedi
over the issue of security inside the hospital premises,
medicos at the Safdarjung hospital decided to continue with
their indefinite strike that started off today.
"We will continue our strike as there was no solid
assurance given by the Union Minister of State for Health
Dinesh Trivedi regarding security facility inside the hospital
premises. We had demanded security of the hospital premises by
the central paramilitary forces which has been denied," Joint
Secretary, RDA, Safdarjung hospital, Dr Pratap Dutta said.
Demanding enhanced security of the hospital nearly 1,200
resident doctors of Safdarjung Hospital called for strike at
the hospital after one of their colleagues was allegedly
beaten up by relatives of a patient.
"There is no count as to how many times doctors have been
manhandled and beaten up by patient`s relatives. Yesterday, a
patient`s relative had stormed the gynaecology department
after one of the patients was declared dead. The security was
unable to control the crowd. In the process, one doctor was
beaten up," he said.
"Services remained unaffected today as the strike was
called late, say around 12 noon. But if this strike continues
patient care will "undoubtedly suffer," Dutta said.
Medical Superintendent, Safdarjung hospital, Dr N K
Mohanty said he tried to assure the doctors but they wanted to
talk to the minister.
"I have assured them to change the security agency
manning the hospital now. But doctors were not satisfied and
decided to talk to the minister about it. 1,200 doctors called
off work. The out patient department was closed by the time
the doctors went on strike," he said.
