New Delhi: More than 4,000 men travelling in Delhi Metro's coaches reserved for women have paid about Rs 11 lakh in fines since last year, an official said on Tuesday.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) reserved the first coach of every train for women from October 2, 2010. Since then, there have been regular incidents of men forcing their way into the reserved coaches.

"Four thousand two hundred and eighty-nine male passengers have been prosecuted from October last year to August 31 this year for unlawful entry into coach reserved for women and fines worth Rs 10,72,250 have been collected," a DMRC official who did not wish to be named, said.

"It has been a successful initiative," he said.

Delhi Metro initially imposed a fine of Rs 200 each on men found flouting the law.

This was increased by Rs 50 following the November 25, 2010 incident when several male passengers travelling in a women's coach were thrashed by police.

"We keep distributing leaflets having helpline numbers of DMRC and nearby police stations to travellers, especially women. Moreover, the passengers can always press the emergency alarm present in all coaches and talk to the driver," added the official.

Under the 'Bunch Domination Group', women constables of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Delhi Metro Rail Police, as also DMRC staffers randomly board women's coaches to catch the offenders.

"This was started around two months back," CISF spokesperson Rohit Katitar said.

According to DMRC, around 4.5 lakh women passengers take the Metro every day on weekdays while on the weekends the number is 3.25 lakh.

Delhi Metro runs around 2,000 train trips and ferries more than 18 lakh passengers every day. After the third phase, expected to be completed by early 2016, the ridership will rise to 30 lakh.

This is really worst thing about India one hand we said men & women are equal about everything then why special treatment if men are being punished for traveling in women couch then women must be punished with same fine.

Government talks about gender equality and they starts gender discrimination. Two face of government. Its alright if government want to give them preferences but why seats are reserved for females in another bogies. But Men will be men....still they are not understanding that first coach is for females. It shows the tendency of males.

There should not be any reservation for women in common metro coach when they have separate coach reserved for them. I had experienced that women love to travel in common coach which is full of men just to get the reserved seat. If such reservation for women will continue then the day is not too far when men will need reserved seats. This is unfortunate that our Indian constitution gives power to women to such extant that become a problem for men. This needs to be re-consider.

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE IN METRO WAS TOTAL DISASTER,NO COMMON SENSE USED BY PASSENGERS AT ALL,SMELL OF SWEAT IS KILLING, VULGARITY TOWARD WOMEN WAS AWFUL. GOVT SHOULD INCREASE THE FINE FOR LAW BREAKERS AND ALSO SET SOME STANDARDS FOR BEHAVIOR ..

In the first place NO coach/seat should be reserved for women. If the same is reserved, then NO women should allowed to travel in any other coach ,because if a husband and wife are travelling together, then the husband is told to go and sit/stand in another coach. Similarly, if there is a seat or not, no women should be allowed to travel in other coaches except womens coach. There may be a few seats as at present for old and disabled persons, but there hardly any one who offers his seat to such people.Still the idea to reserve some seats for old/handicapped etc is fine - for some day some person might offer his seat to the more needy.

Yes, still Men and Women are equal in work manner not in physical manner. Another point is if Prabhaker susessted that no women should allowed to travel in any other coach except reserved coach then in every metro train should have half reserved coach of total number of available coach, this idea will also increase fines that metro collected from men who will travel in women reserved coach
