New Delhi: The relatives of the 22-year-old
girl, who lost her legs after she fell on a track at a metro
station here, today demanded that she be provided with a job
either by the Delhi Metro or the city government.
Mehzabeen and 25-year-old Birju fell down from the
platform due to over-crowding and their legs were crushed by a
train before the driver could apply emergency brakes. While
Mehzabeen lost both her legs in the incident, one of Birju's
leg had to be amputated.
The condition of Mehzabeen, who was yesterday shifted to
a private hospital in Chanakyapuri, improved today and a
surgery performed on her was successful, her cousin Shabnam
said.
"The doctors have told us that Mehzabeen's surgery was
successful and her condition has improved a lot. However, she
is still unconscious," she said.
Shabnam demanded either the Delhi Government or Delhi
Metro provide her with a job so that "her future can be
secured."
She also sought to put the blame on DMRC, saying the
accident could have been averted if the guards were alert.
Shabnam said the DMRC has assured her family that they
will bear the medical costs of Mehzabeen.
When contacted, DMRC officials appeared to rule out
providing a job to her, saying the organisation was "not
responsible" for the mishap.
Delhi Police have registered a case of negligence against
unknown people and have recorded the duo's statements.
Meanwhile, Birju's mother reached Delhi today from their
village in Bihar.
His friend Promod Yadav claimed Birju had been mentally
disturbed for sometime ever since he was beaten up by some
people in the slum area where he lived.
