New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the city government to install 21 jammers around the
Tihar Jail by August 15 to check illegal use of mobile phones
in the prison.
A division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and
Justice Sanjiv Khanna gave the direction after the Delhi
government`s Standing Counsel (criminal side) Pawan Sharma
submitted that out of 80 jammers, 9 have been installed and 21
more jammers were to be installed soon.
The bench was hearing a PIL alleging that the jail
authorities have failed to enforce a total ban on the mobile
phones use inside the jail as some prisoners had managed to
smuggle them in.
The court had converted a letter, written by a
prisoner, alleging that the jail officials have failed to
check the misuse of the mobile phones in the prison.
Taking a serious view of the use of mobile phones by
inmates, the high court had directed the authorities to seize
all the phone instruments forthwith.
Earlier, at least nine mobile phones and 11 SIM cards
were recovered from the jail. Mobile phones are prohibited
inside the prison.
