My husband concerned about 'beautiful women' because I am average-looking: Somnath Bharti's wife

New Delhi: After facing criticism from all quarters, former Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti has now become the target of his wife over his controversial remarks on women.

Bharti had yesterday said that if the AAP government led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is granted control of the Delhi Police, then they would make sure "beautiful women" are able to go out even at midnight.

"I am fully confident that if Delhi government is given full freedom (over security), beautiful women will be able to go out even after midnight without any fear,” the AAP MLA said. "We will provide a fully-secure Delhi..." he added.

However, the remarks have generated heat not just in Delhi's political circles but also at his home.

Bharti's efforts to explain and defend the comments have clearly failed and his infuriated wife has accused the AAP MLA of not being concerned about her.

“I am an average-looking woman, maybe that's why I was ill treated by him,” Lipika Mitra. She was referring to the domestic violence complaint she had filed against Bharti recently.

“He clearly isn't concerned about my security but only about the security of 'beautiful' women,” Lipika added, as per ANI.

Bharti had made the remarks during a discussion on setting up of 'Commission of Inquiry' in the Delhi Assembly yesterday.

Clarifying on his controversial remarks, the AAP leader today said, “When I was a child, my grandfather used to tell me that during the British rule, the security was so tight that beautiful women laden with jewellery could travel from Kanyakumari to Kashmir at midnight without being touched.”

“I've just used a proverb to set a benchmark for a secure environment where every woman should feel safe,” he added.
