NDMC man caught driving in New Delhi

An NDMC employee has been sentenced to five days in jail for driving in an inebriated condition.

New Delhi: An NDMC employee, sentenced to five days in jail for driving in an inebriated condition, has been spared imprisonment by a Delhi court on the condition that he would assist police at busy traffic signals for five days.

Additional Sessions Judge(ASJ) S C Rajan has asked Rajpal Singh, employed with the New Delhi Municipal Corporation to report to the South West Delhi`s Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) (Traffic) in morning for five days for assisting police at busy traffic signals.

"The DCP will depute him to assist the traffic police officials on duty at any busy traffic red light under his jurisdiction in managing or diverting traffic from 10 am to 5 pm for five days," the court said.
Modifying the jail sentence, the sessions court also said as Singh has no criminal history and is the only bread earner in his family, it would meet the ends of justice if he is given an opportunity to mend himself and learn the norms of civic society.

Singh had come to the sessions court seeking leniency after a magisterial court on April 4 had sentenced him to five days in jail with a fine of Rs 1,000 for driving his car under influence of liquor at Dwarka road here.

Singh, however, had been released on bail till filing of his appeal against the magisterial court order.

Seeking leniency, Singh`s counsel told the ASJ that he was not aware of the consequences of pleading guilty.

The counsel further argued that Singh is a government employee working in NDMC and if he is sent behind the bars he will be suspended from?his job and his family including two school going children would be left starving.
