New Delhi: There is a need to send out a message of harmony in society to avoid a repeat of the "very saddening incident" in which a youth from the northeast died after being assaulted in the city, Union Minister RPN Singh said on Sunday at the Delhi Police Raising Day function here.

Addressing Delhi Police personnel after taking the salute at their 67th Raising Day Parade, the minister of state for home said that Delhi belonged to all Indians and nobody should feel unsafe here.

"Delhi Police is one of the best forces in the country, but there is more we need to achieve," Singh said. He was referring to the case of Nido Tania, the youth from Arunachal Pradesh who died recently after being assaulted in the city.
Singh said, "A situation where the common man feels no hesitation or fear in contacting police would be ideal," while adding that "it is sad that women feel unsafe in the city".

Talking about the issue of corruption, Singh said that an zero tolerance approach needs to be adopted by all if graft was to be erased.

"Corruption has become a disease in our country which must be eradicated," he said.
Meanwhile, talking about the steps taken by Delhi Police to ensure the safety of people from the northeast here, Commissioner BS Bassi pointed at the recently launched anti-racism helpline.

Adding that a special cell had been set up to deal with matters involving foreigners, Bassi said that a vigilance helpline has also been introduced for lodging of complaints against corrupt officials.

He also announced that an online portal for registering complaints for lost items is to be launched soon.

Praising his force, Bassi said, "Our main focus was to find a solution for the large number of cases that went unregistered.

"But this year, within a period of 45 days, we have recorded a 111 per cent rise in registration of cases," he said.

He also used the opportunity to thank Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung for his "complete support for and cooperation" with Delhi police.

At the function, Singh also gave away medals to police personnel for meritorious service.
