Nido Taniam`s death: Northeast people demand anti-racism law

The parents and relatives of Nido Tania, an Arunachal Pradesh student who died after being beaten up by shopkeepers here, Saturday held a memorial service and urged the government to take steps to end discrimination against people from the northeast.

New Delhi: The parents and relatives of Nido Taniam, an Arunachal Pradesh student who died after being beaten up by shopkeepers here, Saturday held a memorial service and urged the government to take steps to end discrimination against people from the northeast.

Hundreds of people, including students, gathered at Jantar Mantar also demanded an anti-racism law so that people involved in racist acts can be punished. Arunachal Pradesh MP Takam Sanjoy said that though assurances have been given by the government, why do the people from the northeast continuously face discrimination in the national capital. He said the role of police and the city government was very important to end such activities in society. "Do people from the northeast need to look like people from other parts of the country to prove that they are Indian?" Sanjoy asked. "We won`t let the life of Nido Tania go in vain and we want to tell the government that we will keep our protest on till all the shopkeepers who killed Nido are given capital punishment," said Naga Students Union president Apao, who uses only one name. He said that without getting an assurance from the government for a proper anti-racism law, students from the northeast will keep on protesting in the capital. "We want to tell the government that we won`t back off till we get the assurance," he added.
