New Delhi: The Delhi government has no plans to grant new permits for autorickshaws, whose number will be maintained at 55,000, an official said.

A transport department official told a news agency that the number of autorickshaws in the capital was fixed at 55,000 by the Supreme Court in 1997.

Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely also said in the assembly recently that there were no plans to grant new permits.

A total of 54,612 autorickshaws in the capital are registered with the department, the official added.

He said a welfare scheme for autorickshaw drivers was also being finalised.
