New Delhi: A Pakistani diplomat and his driver were allegedly roughed up on Monday after his vehicle hit a motorcycle in south Delhi, police said.

The incident took place at Ber Sarai at around 7.25 pm when Zirgham Raza, First Secretary (Trade) in the Pakistan High Commission here, was returning to his home in south Delhi`s Vasant Kunj area.

"They met with an accident with a motorcycle coming from Ber Sarai. It was a freak accident and there was no damage or injury to any party," police said, adding he suffered "minor bruises".

There were different versions of the accident with the Indian authorities stating that when the diplomat`s car, a Toyota, hit the motorcycle, Roshni, who was sitting behind Rohit, fell off.

There was an argument between Raza`s driver Haider Zaman and the motorcycle duo ensuing in a brawl and the diplomat suffering minor bruises when he tried to intervene.

The Pakistan High Commission claimed that Raza was going home in Vasant Kunj from the diplomatic mission in Chanakyapuri area when two persons on a motorcyle hurled abuses at them near Jawaharlal Nehru University campus at around 6.30 pm.

The High Commission lodged a strong protest with the Ministry of External Affairs over the issue, its spokesman Manzoor Ali Memon said tonight.

The diplomat and his driver were assaulted by some people, the High Commission said and demanded an immediate probe and security for its staff here.

According to police, the control room received a call at 7.26 pm about the accident. Raza was travelling by his Toyota car.

"The driver and Roshni sustained minor bruises. Raza also received a bruise when he intervened in the matter. Both parties went for medical examination," police said.

Foreign ministry sources said it was a "minor accident" and that there was no damage to the vehicle of the diplomat, who called the police.

The High Commission also asked the government to ensure safety and security of its staff as per the Vienna Convention and international diplomatic practices.

In Islambad, the Foreign Office spokesman came out with a brief statement claiming that Raza and his driver had sustained "serious injuries" and that an FIR has been lodged with police.

Motorcyclist involved arrested

The motorcyclist was arrested for misbehaving with Raza.

"Goldy was arrested for misbehaving with the Pakistani diplomat after his bike scraped past the diplomat`s car in Munirka around 7 p.m.," said a police officer.

According to police, Goldy had an altercation with the diplomat Zargam Raza`s driver first and later with him.

In a late night statement, the Pakistan High Commission described the incident as "most unfortunate and regrettable".
