Perform or `face the music`, Delhi CM warns discoms

New Delhi: Unhappy over frequent load shedding this winter, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday told discoms that power outages during peak summers would not be "tolerated" and asked them to keep the capital`s roads well-illuminated throughout the year.

Talking tough with officials of discoms and Delhi Transco Limited, Dikshit asked them tie-up for additional power supply well-in-advance to avoid outages anywhere in the city especially during summers.

"It is time to perform, otherwise the discoms will have to face music," an official statement said.

Dikshit "expressed her displeasure over series of outages during extreme winter season despite the peak power demand being only 3400 MW. This has exposed the claims of discoms of having suitable tie-ups to requisition additional power as and when required," it said.

Chairing a meeting to discuss an action plan for uninterrupted power supply in Delhi, she said the city government generally faces public ire during unscheduled power cuts and longer outages.

"The discoms are not in habit of giving any explanation to the consumers during outages. It has also been observed that the senior officers in discoms remain unavailable during crisis," the statement said.

Dikshit asked the discoms and DTL to complete their all capacity additions by February, 2013 and to strictly adhere to the deadline failing which the situation may become unmanageable during ensuing summer.

"Outages during extreme summer would not be tolerated and the city government will not be carried away by any excuse at that stage," she told the discoms and DTL.

On non-improvement of street-lighting in the capital, she put the onus on discoms to keep Delhi roads well-illuminated.

"It is for the discoms to concentrate on proper upkeep and maintenance. The maintenance continues to be poor despite existence of SCADA system and MoU signed with DISCOMs. Dikshit said the government would like to get conducted a social audit of functionality of the present street-lighting," it said

She also said that another review will be taken during next month to assess the extent of improvement.
