Phew! Weatherman predicts some relief from summer scorcher

The long wait for rains is likely to end this weekend for Delhiites, who braved another day of scorching heat and high humidity on Sunday.

New Delhi: The long wait for rains is likely to end this weekend for Delhiites, who braved another day of scorching heat and high humidity on Sunday.

"Conditions are favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into some more parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, western Uttar Pradesh and remaining parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh and some parts of Haryana (including Delhi) and Punjab during next 23 days," the MeT Department said.

It has forecast pre-monsoon showers in the city tomorrow.
The maximum temperature was recorded at 41.1 degree Celsius, five degree Celsius above normal, while the minimum was recorded at 29.5 degrees, two degrees above normal.

The humidity oscillated between 39 and 77 per cent.
Residents have been eagerly waiting for rains as the city has been reeling under heat wave conditions with the maximum temperature remaining over 40 degrees Celsius for the whole of June and July till now.

The normal onset date for south-west monsoon in the capital is June 29. But last year, it reached Delhi ahead of schedule on June 26 but in 2010, it had a late arrival on July five.

The earliest onset of monsoon over Delhi during the past 30 years was on June 15, 2008 and while the most delayed onset was on July 26, 1987.
During monsoon, the Weatherman says, if the city gets 645.7 mm of rains, it is considered normal for the capital.

However this June, Delhi received only one-sixth of the rains.
"The city witnessed rainfall activity on five days, against an average of seven days, with a total rainfall of 15.5 mm against its normal value of 65.5 mm," a senior MeT official said.

Last month has been the hottest June in past 30 years with heat wave conditions prevailing in the city on the first three days of the month and during most days of the second fortnight.

"The maximum and minimum temperatures remained normal to appreciably above normal during the month barring one or two days when they were below normal. The maximum temperature during the month was 45.4 degree Celsius recorded on June 1.

"The mean maximum and minimum temperatures during the month were 41.9?C and 30.6?C, against their normal values of 39.1 ?C and 28.0 ?C respectively, which were highest since 1981," the official said.
