New Delhi: New Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi on Thrusday adopted Old Pilanji village in her constituency to develop it as a model village under a scheme envisaged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"Following the appeal of PM Modi during Independence Day address, I have today adopted Old Pilanji village to develop it as a model village," Lekhi told reporters here.
The 46-year-old MP said she was also considering to adopt five more villages of her constituency.
In Pilanji, she vowed to work on the sanitation, drainage and roads in order to develop it fully as a model village.
"The main problem of Delhi's villages is that they are out of the ambit of municipal law. Houses, roads have been constructed in irregular manner following which the pace of development work was not fast," she said.
"In Pilanji village, we need to work on sanitation, drainage system and then on roads so that we fully develop it as a model village. I have roped in several consultants and will also be including some persons of School Of Architecture to prepare design of model village," Lekhi said.
Speaking on toilet management in the village, Lekhi said that eight public block toilets, including four for women, will be constructed and they will be bio-digester toilets which digest organic material biologically and treated water can be used for irrigation and sanitation.
"We will also run an awareness programme about cleaning of nearby areas, and for this work, we will rope in women. During campaign, we will tell women not to dump used food in drains and outside their house," she said.
During his Independence Day speech at Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced a scheme under which MPs would develop one model village each in their constituencies.
