Mysore: The government plans to set up five national level institutions like the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said today.
He said he would form a committee to decide on the location of the new centres and a parallel endeavour would be to start speech and audiology departments in all medical colleges which wish to have them.
Addressing the faculty and students of AIISH here, Vardhan said prevention of communication disabilities and rehabilitation of patients form a major thrust area of his vision of a healthy India.
He also asked AIISH to launch a rural outreach model for the whole country by undertaking surveys in villages on the burden of hearing and speech disorders.
Vardhan also stressed on the importance of prescribing rational drugs which considerably reduces the expenditure burden of patients.
