New Delhi: Several police teams were working on specific leads and raids were being conducted in Delhi and neighbouring states but investigators were yet to make any headway into the killing of former INLD legislator Bharat Singh, who was gunned down on Sunday evening in southwest Delhi's Najafgarh area.
Refuting allegations made by Singh's elder brother Krishan Pehelwan that police did not give adequate security to the former MLA which led to his murder, Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi on Tuesday said, "We had been giving him security whenever required".
Asked about progress in investigation in the case, Bassi said, "We are working on specific clues. Investigation is on and we will soon make arrests in the case. We are doing what the matter calls for".
The police chief also said that no gangs are functioning in Delhi, these are outcomes of local feuds in villages which are controlled gradually.
38-year-old Singh was attacked by over six armed men who had reached the spot in a SUV. At least 15-20 rounds of bullets were fired. He was later declared dead at Medanta hospital in Gurgaon. Singh had received six bullets, including two in his head from close range.
Other than one of Singh's personal guard, a woman identified as Sunita, Paras (16) and a Delhi Police constable, Sandeep were also injured in the incident.
DCP (southwest) R A Sanjeev today said that all the four persons who were injured in the incident are fine now.
"Investigation is underway in the case and efforts are on to nab the assailants," he said.
The needle of suspicion has been on two gangs who have had reasons to eliminate Singh, one is Vikas Lagarpuria and the other is Udaiveer alias Kaale.
It is said that Kaale's father and brother were allegedly bumped off by Singh and his brother's gang. It is being suspected that Udaiveer, who was recently released from jail hired hitmen to kill Singh.
On the other hand, Lagarpuria, a Haryana-based gangster had a tiff over a 1400 yard plot located between Najafgarh and Dwarka and the duo's men had recently come face to face over fencing of the plot.
Police is hunting for these two and their men who have gone underground soon after the incident.
"Other than these two, we are also looking for all those big or small criminal elements that could have benefited from the elimination of Singh. Raids are being conducted in Haryana, UP and other in outskirts of Delhi in this connection," said a police official associated with the probe.
Police is scanning the CCTV footage of the neighbouring areas of the banquet hall where the attack had taken place on Singh to find clues.
