New Delhi: Stringent laws and a change in
male psyche are the need of the hour to tackle the increasing
number of cases of sexual harassment, experts said here on Monday.

Participating in a debate organised by channel Star Plus,
NCW Joint Secretary Sundari Subramaniam Pujari said good laws,
their implementation and proper execution are important in
curbing sexual harassment.

Awareness of rights among women can up to a greater
extent help stop sexual violence against them, she said.

"It is shameful that in entire Indian Penal Code, there
is one section, 509, which deals with insulting a woman
through action or words or by showing objects which is the
closest which comes to sexual harassment and which carries a
sentence of maximum of imprisonment of one year," C Aryam
Sundaram, a Supreme Court lawyer, said.

Madhu Trehan, a writer, said change in male psyche is
important in order to stop such cases.
