Rise above politics to fight vector-borne diseases: Delhi LG

Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung on Wednesday appealed to the people to rise above considerations of politics and fight chikungunya and dengue diseases unitedly.

New Delhi: Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung on Wednesday appealed to the people to rise above considerations of politics and fight chikungunya and dengue diseases unitedly.

An LG office statement said Jung held a meeting to review the situation in the wake of chikungunya and dengue cases reported in the national capital.

"I appeal to all to rise above political considerations and fight the menace unitedly. Historically, in emergencies, people have come together and fought. That is what is required now," he said.

The Lt. Governor also urged all stakeholders to make all-out efforts to check dengue and chikungunya cases.

According to the statement, Jung urged Delhi residents to prevent stagnation of water in overhead tanks and keeping water in containers/utensils for long time, apart from keeping such containers covered.

The meeting was attended by Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain, Chief Secretary K.K. Sharma, Health Secretary Chandrakar Bharti along with the New Delhi Municipal Council Chairman and all three municipal commissioners as well as Medical Superintendents of all major hospitals of Delhi.

Representatives of the civic bodies told the meeting that fogging was being done regularly in their respective areas to tackle such cases.

The Medical Superintendents of hospitals assured that sufficient beds were available to treat dengue and chikungunya cases and that sufficient stocks of medicines and diagnostic kits were available.

Jain said private hospitals must not misuse the situation to exploit patients and asked people not to panic. He said the government had cancelled the leave of all government hospital staff.

The Lt. Governor directed the officials to ensure that hospitals, clinics and laboratories do not turn away any critical case of chikungunya or dengue.

"Though the hospitals and staff are under tremendous pressure, they must rise to the occasion to meet the challenge," Jung said in the meeting.

The Lt. Governor also directed the municipal agencies to mount full-scale efforts to check mosquito breeding and follow a targeted approach, based on pockets of high incidence and to carry out fumigation in vulnerable areas.
