SBI manager`s family gets Rs 31 lakh compensation

The kin of State Bank of India`s (SBI) manager, who died in road accident involving rashly driven SUV, have been awarded compensation of over Rs 31 lakh by Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) here.

New Delhi: The kin of a State Bank of India`s (SBI) manager, who died in a road accident involving a rashly driven SUV, have been awarded a compensation of over Rs 31 lakh by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) here. The tribunal held the victim had died in the accident in April 2007 due to the rash and negligent driving of the car driver.
It directed Reliance General Insurance Company Ltd, with which the offending vehicle was insured, to pay Rs 31,43,808 to the wife and four children of victim Raj Pal Singh, who was working as a manager in SBI. "...The fact that respondent 1 (car driver Mukesh Kumar) was prosecuted by the investigating officer... For having caused the accident and further that Kumar himself did not appear in the witness box to explain how negligence and carelessness could be attributed to the deceased for causing the said accident, preponderance of probability is that Raj Pal Singh died due to rash and negligent driving of the offending vehicle by Kumar," MACT Presiding Officer Rekha Rani said. According to Singh`s family members, the accident took place on the night of April 9, 2007, when the victim was walking near his house in Nand Gram area in Ghaziabad and a rashly driven car, proceeding from Haridwar towards Delhi, hit him. The 53-year-old man received grievous injuries and was taken to hospital where he died on April 20, 2007. The car driver, however, said the accident was caused due to negligence and carelessness on the part of Singh as he suddenly came in front of the vehicle. He said he had tried his level best to save the victim. PTI
