The South Delhi Municipal Corporation is mulling delivering free birth and death certificates at people`s doorsteps.

New Delhi: The South Delhi Municipal Corporation is mulling delivering free birth and death certificates at people`s doorsteps.
The certificates will be delivered "within two working days" after birth or death in families living in South Delhi areas.

After taking charge as the new chairman of the Standing Committee, Satish Upadhyay said, "It is one of the top priorities for the SDMC to deliver death and birth certificates at people`s doorstep, with the cost being borne by the civic body itself."

Upadhyay was today elected unopposed as the chairman of the Standing Committee today while Pankaj Kumar was elected as its deputy chairman.

Expounding the idea further Upadhyay said, "We want to deliver the certificates within two working days, all at the corporation`s cost."

Among other plans for the SDMC are creating dhalao-free zones (dhalaos are garbage dumps), and streamlining of health and education facilities and to bring greater transparency in the functioning of the civic body, Upadhyay said.

The chairman also warned against laidback attitude.

"We are already looking into the shortcomings in the functioning of the municipal body and will take steps accordingly, all in the best interest of the people," he said.

"Of course fighting malaria, dengue and keeping the city clean is our duty but we want people and RWAs to help us and co-operate with us in our endeavours. We want people to develop ownership in the city and the roads and civic amenities they use on a daily basis," he added.

Ashish Sood and Kusum Khatri were elected as chairman and deputy chairman of the SDMC`s Education Committee.
