St Stephen's row: Kejriwal asks students to follow principles of democracy

Amidst a raging controversy over a ban on a student e-zine by St Stephen's college, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday attended a graduation ceremony at the institute, even as a section of students had urged him to turn down the invite "in support for freedom of speech".

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who attended the convocation ceremony of St. Stephen's College on Saturday, urged the students to follow the principles of democracy.

"Don't forget democracy. Democracy is by the people, of the people and for the people, we hear this so much. If people stop participating in democracy, then democracy will not exist on its own. People have to participate in democracy. So, don't forget it. It is very important," said Kejriwal.

Kejriwal encouraged the students to travel and explore, urging them to meet people of different social and cultural backgrounds to enhance their experience.

"I would like to tell you that don't take your career too seriously. Our lives are a hard-earned thing. You should learn to enjoy this life. When you enjoy the life in its actual form, your career takes care of itself. This is the age when you can explore life and take risks," he said.

Kejriwal attended the convocation despite the students campaigning to get him to boycott the graduation ceremony owing to the controversy over the suspension of a student.

Devansh Mehta was suspended by the college on disciplinary grounds after he published an article on their online magazine, allegedly without seeking clearance from the principal on its content.

The Delhi High Court had earlier on Friday stayed his suspension from the college, allowing him to attend the graduation ceremony.

Mehta was also stripped off a good conduct award which he was to receive from the chief guest.
