New Delhi: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday strictly told power distribution companies, PWD and civic bodies to make all street lights across Delhi fully functional immediately.

Dikshit issued the instruction at a meeting she had with CEOs of the power distribution companies and top officials of PWD, municipal corporations, Delhi Cantonment Board and Delhi Transco Ltd.

"Street lighting in Delhi must match the street lighting in developed cities of the world. The functionality of the street lights should be more than 98 per cent," the Chief Minister told the meeting.

Noting that the city government had invested a lot in installation of superior quality street lights in the run up to the Commonwealth Games held in 2010, Dikshit criticised the concerned agencies and discoms for poor illumination of various arterial roads across the city.

In some areas, street lights are maintained by PWD and civic agencies while in majority areas they are looked after by private discoms. There is no single agency responsible for an effective coordination between various agencies involved in maintenance of street lights.
