Tomar's arrest justified only if he tried to tamper with evidence: Prashant Bhushan

Ousted Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Prashant Bhushan on Wednesday said that Jitendra Singh Tomar's arrest is justified only if the latter had tried to tamper with the evidence.

New Delhi: Ousted Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Prashant Bhushan on Wednesday said that Jitendra Singh Tomar's arrest is justified only if the latter had tried to tamper with the evidence.

"Arrest is only necessary in cases where a person may escape or is likely to commit the same offence or is likely to tamper with the evidence. In Jitendra Singh Tomar's case, the only apprehension the police may have had is that he may try to tamper with the evidence . If that is the case, perhaps arrest may have been justified; but in such cases arrest is not usually justified," said Bhushan.

"In Tomar's case, the first question is whether he has a degree or not. And secondly, if the party should have kept him in the post even after the issue was going on in the High Court," he added.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia are expected to meet Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung today in wake of Tomar tendering his resignation as the Law Minister.

Tomar, who was yesterday sent to four-day police custody, has so far reiterated that his degree is not fake and accused the BJP-led government at the Centre of hatching a conspiracy into the entire episode.
