New Delhi: Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel had today (Monday) called a press conference at 4:00 pm at the Constitution Club here.
The press conference gained importance amid speculation that he was unhappy at reports of Harshvardhan being unofficially chosen as BJP’s Delhi CM candidate, and the presser not being held at the party office. The briefing was viewed by many as a platform to air his disapproval and possibly turn rebel.
However, the press conference turned out to be a dampener, at least for journalists seeking ‘masala’, with Goel instead choosing to hit out at the Congress government and listing why BJP should be voted to power.
His remarks clearly hint that the state BJP leader is fast reconciling to the fact that he would not be named the BJP’s CM candidate and that he is left with two choices – seek a safe exit and stay in BJP for now, or turn rebel and meet the fate of the likes of ex-Delhi CM Madan Lal Khurana who went into political oblivion after quitting the BJP.
Behind the scenes, sources say Goel has accepted the fact that he might be the leader of the party here but he is not acceptable to many as the government’s face if the party comes to power after 15 years.
While Harshvardhan was a popular leader in the Delhi BJP, his emerging as the probable CM candidate hasn’t surprised many.
Many associated him with the charisma required in a leader to become the CM, which many believed Goel lacked.
What now remains to be seen is – when will the BJP officially announce its CM candidate for Assembly polls in Delhi, to be held on December 4.
Are there more surprises in store?
