New Delhi: The Delhi government today told
the High Court that it has implemented the notification
banning use of plastic bags and carried out a number of
enforcement drives following which cases have been registered
against violators.

Through an affidavit to a Division Bench of Justice Madan
B Lokur and Justice Mukta Gupta, Delhi government said that in
compliance with the government`s January, 2009, notification
119 complaints have been filed against 43 people, who were
found to be using plastic bags, before the Metropolitan
Magistrate.

The court was informed that the Magistrate decided two
complaints with heavy fines against M/s Shoppers Stop, Ansal
Plaza in Khel Gao Marg and M/s Sai Stationary, Kashmere Gate
recently.

The Court was hearing a petition filed by Vinod Jain,
an environment activist, alleging that despite the government
notification banning use of plastic bags following a Delhi
High Court`s order a number of instances have come to the
notice that rampant use of such bags is going on in the city
and no action has been taken against violators.
