Wish I could reincarnate as a woman: Drukpa

New Delhi: A strong proponent of gender
equality, the Gyalwang Drukpa, spiritual head of the Drukpa
lineage of Buddhism wishes to be born a woman in his
next birth.

"I wish I reincarnate as a woman, hopefully not a
complicated one," the 12th reincarnation of Gyalwang Drukpa
told reporters before delivering his talk `Happy Mind, Happy
Life` here recently.

The session organised at India Habitat Centre, marked the
end of the fifth eco Padyatra, in which Gyalwang Drukpa,
accompanied by over 400 monks and nuns marched from Mumbai to
Bhopal via Ajanta Ellora to spread the message of peace,
harmony, goodwill and respect for the environment.

Ruing the lack of confidence in most women, Drukpa
expressed his wish to set up schools for girls where they
would be taught confidence, apart from the usual subjects.

"I find confidence lacking in today`s women, including my
nuns. I want to set up schools for girls where they are taught
confidence, so that even if they are housewives, they can
contribute better to the world," said the Drukpa.

The Buddhist leader Holiness has opened nunneries to
mitigate the gender inequality in Buddhism. He has also
inspired nuns of the Drupka lineage to break gender barriers
and learn Kung Fu, which was forbidden for women. These nuns
featured in a documentary titled `Kung Fu Nuns`.

Besides gender equality, ecological issues are close to
the monk`s heart and every year he undertakes an annual yatra
in different parts of the country to raise awareness about the
environment.
