New Delhi: A youth has been sentenced to four years in jail and fined Rs 6,000 by a Delhi court for stealing a man's rickshaw and Rs 1,000 after drugging him over four years ago.

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Illa Rawat sentenced Uttar Pradesh native Raju, who along with his accomplice Adil, had tricked rickshaw puller Joginder to take a drug-laced soft drink near GT Karnal Road on September 10, 2007.

According to police, Raju and his accomplice Adil, who is still absconding, after drugging Joginder, tried to flee with his rickshaw and Rs 1,000, but the victim managed to raise an alarm, which resulted in passersby giving a chase to Raju and nab him.

The court sentenced Raju despite his pleas for leniency on the ground that he had already spent over a year in jail during the trial during which his father expired.

He had also pleaded that he was the sole bread-winner of his family comprising his mother, two unmarried sisters, wife and two minor daughters.

His pleas for leniency, however, were opposed by the prosecution which said Raju's offence was "serious", deserving no leniency.

"Keeping in view all the submissions, circumstances and the facts of the case, besides the gravity of the offence, I sentence convict Raju to rigorous imprisonment for four years along with a fine of Rs 5,000 for the offence punishable under section 328 IPC (Causing hurt by means of poison)," the judge said, while also imposing another fine of Rs 1,000 on Raju for trying to steal the rickshaw.
