Ancient human remains found in Sardinia Sassari: A group of speleologists in western Sardinia have discovered human and animal remains believed to date back 250,000-300,000 years in a mountain gorge.

The remains, uncovered in the Nurighe cave near the western Sardinian city of Sassari have been preserved thanks to lava flows from the ancient Monte Cuccuruddu volcano, which covered entire valleys and rivers.

The speologists found what may be an adult Neanderthal thumb bone dating from the Old Stone Age (2,500,000-20,000 BC) belonging to one of the first humans in Sardinia.

The oldest human remains previously found in Sardinia date from the Neolithic period or New Stone Age (6,000-2,800 BC).

The information and the spelling are wrong. There is no such ``Nurighe caves``. These are NURAGHES BUILDINGS which are TOWERS and CASTLES built in the stone age by ancient Sardinians. The body remains are 9.000 (Nine Thousand) years old. The name of the hill is ``CuccurEddu`` and was not a volcano. Also, the WHOLE BODY has been found (not a thumb) and it`s not a neanthertal one, it`s a Sardinian Homo Sapiens Sapiens, 9.000 years old. Greetings from Sardinia.

well you are an ignorant sardinian, i`m sardinian too, the Nurighe Cave is a grotto inside the municipality of Cheremule not a ``Nuraghe``(megalithic tower), and yes it`s theorized that the remains belonged to a neanderthal man
