Angola declares 2010 as Biodiversity Protection Year

Angola`s Environment Ministry, has declared 2010 as "Biodiversity Protection Year" with a major focus to preserve of a rare giant sable antelope.

Luanda: Angola`s Environment Ministry, has
declared 2010 as "Biodiversity Protection Year" with a major
focus to preserve of a rare giant sable antelope.

The objective includes creation of new conservation
areas, including wildlife parks and reserves, it also includes
raising conservation awareness through talks and distribution
of pamphlets and manuals.

According to a statement issued by Environment Ministry,
programme of action for this year included continuation of the
programme for renovation of national parks in Angola, a
process which started in 2000.

The programme involves the rehabilitation of
administrative infrastructure in the national parks, restoring
of State administration, restocking of fauna and flora and
deployment of guards and other staff required for the
functioning of the parks.

With the support of several institutions, including the
German Technical Co-operation agency, GTZ, the national parks
of Kissama in northern Bengo province and of Cagandala in
Malange province have been rehabilitated, while similar
operations are in their final stages in the parks of Bicuar
(Hula province) and Iona (Namibe).
