Bird species feared to have vanished in Sikkim blaze

A number of bird species may have vanished in a fire that had broken out in Kitam Bird Sanctuary in South Sikkim.

Gangtok: A number of bird species may have
vanished in a fire that had broken out in Kitam Bird Sanctuary
in South Sikkim recently, a Forest official has said.

Many bird species like pigeon and peacock might have died
during a fire in Kitam Bird Sanctuary recently due to natural
reasons, the Divisional Forest Officer (Territorial) Uday
Gurung said at Namchi while presiding over an awareness
campaign on protect of environment and bio-diversity.

The birds generally lay eggs during this time of the year
in the bird sanctuary that may have casualties in the fire, he
said.

The official also solicited cooperation of the local
people to extend support to the forest authorities in
prevention of fire at the bird sanctuary and described the
reserve forest as a fire-prone area.
