`China`s glaciers shrink by 10%` Beijing: China's glaciers have shrunk by a magnitude of 10 per cent over the past 60 years as a result of rising temperatures, according to an official report released today.

The Second National Assessment Report on Climate Change said the average temperature of the land surface in China had increased by 1.38 degrees centigrade from 1951 to 2009.

The report was jointly written by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Meteorological Administration and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, official news agency Xinhua reported.

The report also noted that rising temperatures would lead to the continuous rise of sea levels in the future.

Levels will rise by 80 mm to 130 mm in 2030 compared with 2009, it said.

A recent report also said a number of glaciers in Tibet were melting.

China is the world's largest emitter of carbon dioxide, the phenomenon considered the prime reason for global warming.
