Climate change survey: China most committed for taking action; US, UK 'reluctant'

London: The most significant international agreement to tackle the menace of climate change is all set to happen in December, 2015.

Ahead of the Paris talks, an international internet-based market research firm YouGov recently conducted an online survey (of 15 countries) to find out which nation was the most committed to taking action on climate change.

Surprisingly, the survey found that the United States and the United Kingdom, which are the two biggest emitters of greenhouse gases in the world, are more reluctant to address the problem of climate change as compared to countries like China.

Almost 17% people in the US and 7 % in the UK did not "agree to any international agreement that addresses climate change," as per reports.

While the US figures showed substantial opposition to action, only 1 per cent of the Chinese population disagreed with signing an agreement on climate change.

About 60 per cent of those in China believed the country should take a leadership role in tackling climate change and set targets to tackle the issue soon.

The study further suggested that the reluctance to tackle the problem in the US and the UK seemed to have emanated from the belief that there is no problem at all. On being asked, "how serious the problem was, if at all," at least 32% of the respondents said, "not at all or not very."

In Australia also, 59 per cent believed the country should take a leadership role, and only 3 per cent disagreed with supporting an international agreement.
