Chandigarh: The Haryana Government plans to
set apart about 60 acres of land in Rewari district to provide
facilities of conservation breeding for peafowl and chinkara
in their natural habitat at Manethi village.

Under the project, the breeding of peafowl (peacock-hen)
in three aviaries would be monitored by CCTVs while that of
chinkara (black buck) would be closely watched in their
enclosures. Aviaries would be covered from the top also, an
official spokesman said Friday.

The aim is to provide facilities of conservation breeding
in their natural and undisturbed habitat in the village, about
500 kms from here, by restocking of these protected species by
releasing young ones from the breeding centre.

Infrastructure for the centre would be set up in the
village and its total expenditure for 20 years would be
Rs 19.85 crore, he said.

Proper record of breeding, population and survival after
release would be maintained at the centre.

Veterinary doctors would be engaged and the centre would
have a tube-well and sprinkler for growing green fodder.

These species are placed in Schedule-I of the Wildlife
(Protection) Act, 1972.

Once in plenty in Aravalis of the state, their numbers
fell drastically due to biotic interference deep in their
habitat.

They live in same type of habitat in semi-arid to arid
areas in south west Haryana.
