Here’s how we can reduce carbon emissions by 2100

Here’s how we can reduce carbon emissions by 2100 Washington: The carbon dioxide in the atmosphere can be reduced to less than 40 percent, if people use every available means of reducing emissions, according to a new study.

This includes more nuclear and renewable energy, choosing electricity over fossil fuels, reducing emissions through technologies that capture and store carbon dioxide, and even using forests to store carbon.

Researchers from the Joint Global Change Research Institute introduced the work, called the RCP 4.5 scenario, to independently study how the climate might respond to different increases of greenhouse gases and how much of the sun's energy they trap in the atmosphere. It can also be used to study possible ways to slow climate change and adapt to it.

Also, unlike similar models, it includes carbon stored in forests, causing forest acreage to increase — even as energy systems change to include fuels generated from bioenergy crops and crop waste.

“The RCP 4.5 scenario assumes that action will be taken to limit emissions. Without any action, the emissions, and the heat trapped in the atmosphere, would be much higher, leading to more severe climate change,” said lead author Allison Thomson, a scientist at JGCRI, a collaboration between the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash., and the University of Maryland.

“This scenario and the other three produced in this project will provide a common thread for climate change research across many different science communities,” Thomson said.

The study has been published in the journal Climatic Change.

i fully appreciate and agree with the views of mr.jai- gujarat. the consumption mentality has to go.things must be priced not only as per the resources it consumes but also depending on the carbon emission it produces adding to the global warming. companies producing throw away things are not paying for the possible environmental damages the manufacturing, using and the disposal of a product. the result will be that there won`t be rs.2 ball pen but people will automatically go for more eco friendly product , like the good old fountain pens. similarly for all the products. a new economic system has to be in place in which the corbon footprint of the goods and services produced has to be mandatorily mentioned for all and that should be the basic cost above which the the normal raw material cost needs to be added.the intelligentia has to arrive at formula to give effect to these concepts so that the carbon emission can be reduced.this has to be a world level exercise since the environmental problems transcend the international boundaries. we can wait till 2100 for carbon emission reductions. things have start now.

use of electricity over fossil fuel will not reduce the carbon emission. please note that in india most of the electricity is produced from fossil fuel that is coal hence let us not mis inform people that use of electricity is a greener alternative to coal or wood. if we are sincere then conservation and resuse of each and everything helps in saving earth. even purchasing of rs 2 ball pen should be done with care since every drop of plastic production amounts to significant emissions. we have to think before throwing old stuff be it mobiles, furniture, cutlery. money can buy goodies but at a heavy cost to earth. each one of us needs to act responsibly while consuming anything. think before replacing old stuff. think before driving. switch off ac`s. dont encourage mall culture since they are some of the biggest energy consumers. respect those business which conserve energy rather than those who swith on flood lights to attract customers.
