The home sparrow population in the Union Territory of Puducherry is on the verge of extinction.

Puducherry: The home sparrow population in the Union Territory of Puducherry is on the verge of extinction.
An official source said that this "agonizing trend has emerged due to unbridled urbanisation, lack of vegetation covers and other environmental disturbances".

The source said that the cyclone Thane had had its impact on wide number and variety of birds and with the trees having fallen under the impact of the storm the birds had borne the impact of the storm.

Official source said that attempts were however being made to bring back the home sparrows and those intending to set up cages as was seen in the past on the premises of their homes would be encouraged to do so by the Forests Department.

In the meanwhile the department would come out with a document during the first week of April on the Green Puducherry project to regain the green environment that was damaged in the cyclone.

Already voluntary organizations had been handed saplings to encourage them to take up massive programme to restore the green environment. The Department has also launched a project to replant the trees that had fallen in the cyclone without cutting them away.
