Kalam cautions youngsters about grave water crisis in future Chennai: Former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam has urged youngsters to be aware of water conservation techniques to avoid grave water crisis in future.

Kalam said this while addressing the inaugural function of Exposition on Water Conservation held in Coimbatore on Saturday.

He cautioned that the society may become a victim if tussle among states and nations on water sharing crops up.

“In quest of water, there may arise differences among the neighbouring nations such as Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Pakistan; hence we need to create awareness among the youngsters on the need to conserve water,” Kalam said.

Kalam also said that unless the country’s and its citizens learns about water’s judicious use, we will be in for more problems.

“It is so sad that today, people are forced to buy water in plastic bottles. I am told that bottled water industry is worth nearly 10000 crore rupees and even big companies like the Coke and Pepsi are involved in this bottling of water and making money. So, it is imperative that we ought to save water,” he added.

dr. kalam is absolutely right in highlighting the looming world war over the blue gold i.e. water. nasa`s grace satellite has painted a very grim picture of the alarming depletion of groundwater resources in north-western india. the situation is no better in pakistan, bangladesh, china and countries around the world. the climate change is already having a serious impact on glaciers in the himalayas and surface water. the current level of water consumption is unsustainable and immediate steps are needed to address the issue. some suggestions:
1) massive afforestation programme to augment groundwater resources,
2) use of water conserving equipments and technologies,
3) rainwater harvesting,
4) adoption of green and environment friendly technologies to reduce greenhouse gases,
5) recycling of water,
6) educational campaigns for water conservation,
7) water tariffs (may be highly unpopular),

isro satellites has done a remarkable job in a number of areas: e.g.identifying areas where groundwater levels are too low, glaciers, soil studies etc. there is a need to apply technologies developed by isro to prevent water borne diseases and to conserve water.

however, total privatisation of water industry is not advisable. the private players role should be confined only to consultation and technological upgradation.
